The planet Voltair is one of those rare places rich in gemstones and precious metals. The purest gold in the universe is mined on Voltair. In fact, the gold standard is referred to as the "V standard" since all gold mined is rated against Voltair gold. The gemstones from Voltair are beautiful, unusual and in high demand.
The government of Voltair, a constitutional monarchy, gives a percentage of its trade revenue to each Voltairian citizen as a stipend since there is almost no arable land on Voltair. No citizen of Voltair has to work to live. Some choose to go into a craft to get extra money, but no one there would starve if they didn't. However, since Voltairian citizens do have so much leisure time, some of the most beautiful art comes from there. Fashion is also centered in Voltair. Voltair is the Paris of this universe.
Trade agreements and treaties with Voltair are highly valued since Voltairian ambassadors are notoriously difficult to deal with and put up with no opposition during negotiations. If they aren't given what they want then they will simply go elsewhere. There are plenty of places that would be happy to deal with them. So negotiations with Voltairians are invariably touchy.
